The Style

The Mason trousers are on-trend right now. A nice slender fit with a soft gather on the elasticated waist. Don’t be fooled by thinking that an elasticated waist is old fashioned. It’s a classic shape that has come around in fashion again. High waisted, but not too high.

  • Fabric Suggestions

The style is so versatile that it can be made in an array of soft fabrics, woven or jersey. You can completely transform the look for whichever occasion you choose. It’s fab in bold prints in the springtime, cool linens for hot summer days, soft jerseys for a nice comfy leisure pant or why not make it in a fleece as a jogger and keep nice and cosy and warm in the winter?

More surprisingly this style can be made in a light weight suiting fabric for a nice work trouser. If you’re sitting at a desk most of the day a nice elasticated trouser can give you so much more comfort and we all crave that! Layer a blouse over it, tucked in or left out, you will look very smart.

    Adaptations

Here’s a great idea. Why not make a printed matching set by making the Mason Trouser and the Flawless Camisole? Wear together and tuck the camisole in the trouser. The most comfortable jump suit ever! No need to fully undress to use the ladies. No need to worry if you made it just the right length for your body either, just tuck and go!

You can shorten to a cropped trouser or short. It’s very easy with all lengths indicated on the pattern for you to choose which one you’d like.

The pattern is made for a deep 5cm elastic on the waist but you can make it narrower if you like by reducing the width of the waistband pattern. No need to adapt the leg patterns at all.

Add the mock drawstring to waist or to make without is just fine. Just remember of you’re changing the width of the waist band to make sure you move the markings for the drawstring opening.

    Skill Level

These trousers are aimed at an intermediate sewer. There’s nothing too tricky here though if you’ve made a garment or two before and your confidence is building. No zips, no interfacing, no gathering, no hand sewing.

    Trims

    1. 5cm waist elastic. (or narrower if you prefer) measured to the size of your waist plus a few centimetres. 2. 2 x 10mm Eyelets if you choose to use them for the ties to come out of the waistband. Otherwise buttonholes will do.
